In its round up of best selling funds for advised investors over 2009, Fidelity found despite a slight increase in confidence over the second half of last year, advised clients remained risk adverse compared with other years.

Elsewhere, Fidelity found the top performing sector of the year was Global Emerging Markets, so people who sought out risk further afield, were well rewarded.

Peter Hicks, head of UK retail sales at Fidelity International, said: "While appetite for risk and confidence in investment markets increased in the second half of the year, the overall sales picture for 2009 demonstrates that advised clients remained pretty risk averse by comparison to other years where we have seen the Cautious Managed or Specialist sectors coming out on top.

"Diversification definitely made a comeback in 2009, with the Cautious Managed sector attracting 11 per cent of sales in November and 12 per cent in December, compared with UK Corporate Bonds representing 11 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

"While those latter figures are still very good, they represent a noticeable decrease from their 14 per cent share of sales in October.

"Investors who looked further afield for risk and higher returns were well rewarded in 2009 with Global Emerging Markets and Asia Pacific Ex Japan being the top performers of the year."
