Mr Churchouse joined the mutual in 2004 as head of finance, before taking over as general manager of risk and planning in 2006.

Iain Cornish, chief executive of Yorkshire BS, said: "Robin has made a significant contribution to managing the risks and planning the society's future strategy during a period of great change for the organisation.

"His knowledge of the society and experience in finance, risk management and strategic planning equip him to be an excellent finance director."

Mr Cornish also praised Mr Gosling's contribution to the society in recent years.

He said: "Andrew has successfully managed the society's finances during the worst economic recession on record.

"He has skilfully provided a balance between financial security and delivery of long-term value to our members. He leaves the Yorkshire extremely well placed to continue as a financially strong mutual organisation and we thank him for his contribution and wish him well in his retirement."
