City Spin: Andy Smith
Andy Smith is manager of the Axa Framlington Biotech fund
Which individual has been most influential on your career?
When I came from SmithKline Beecham to work as an investor, my boss at 3i was Andy Musson. He showed me what an investor does, and how we do it. After three years working for him, I used to think, 'How does he know all this stuff?' I still think I’ll never be able to measure up to Andy's broad experience as an investor, but it gives me a target to chase for the rest of my career.
Favourite tipple or wine?
A nice cup of tea. These days I don't get a lot of opportunities to have an alcoholic drink, apart from New Year's Eve or on holiday.
Best/worst piece of advice ever been given?
Everyone lies. It’s from the TV series House.
The one luxury object you couldn't live without?
I don't really do luxuries. I drive a Ford Focus, have a Seiko watch and a Parker pen. Oh, I do have a Mont Blanc wallet, but I bought it from eBay.
Where do you buy your suits or have them made?
I buy my suits from eBay. I'm lucky in being a 40 regular size, so I don't need to try them on. I usually go for a Paul Smith suit for £100-£150 and get the trousers taken apart and put back together again the way I like for another £15.
What's on high rotation on your iPod?
Advanced French by Michelle Thomas. I work for Axa IM, so it's useful to know a little French without your colleagues knowing.
What's the book currently on your bedside table?
Vortex by Larry Bond.
Favourite pub?
Don't have one but they're all better since the smoking ban.
The last time you went to a concert/theatre/exhibition?
Panto on Boxing Day with my family. Cannon and Ball were starring.
