APMG smooths the way for major changes

APMG-International is rolling out a new certification programme called Champs2 to help companies and organisations make smooth transformational changes.

The programme is based on the success of the city of Birmingham in changing the way it does business.

The programme includes helping companies through dramatic change in a systematic way and includes focusing on realising business benefits, support throughout the process, as well as incorporating practical tools and techniques.

The system claims to help the organisation deliver better services and products, provide more job satisfaction for employees and make better use of resources.

Birmingham began transforming itself in 2005 and expects to save more than a billion pounds when the 10-year plan is fully implemented. The city made major changes in several areas, from customer service, to budgeting and how it collects revenue.

Glynn Evans, corporate director of business change for Birmingham City Council, said: “Often incremental change is insufficient, making it essential to fundamentally rethink and redesign what an organisation does so it can succeed.

"Major transformational change is a complex process, requiring clear direction, excellent planning, specialist resources and commitment from the organisation.”

Leah Radstone, new qualifications project manager at APMG-International, said Champs2 certification is not limited to public institutions.

"Although it came out of the public sector it is a more generic methodology that prepares any organisation to be ready for change," she said.

Richard Pharro, chief executive of APMG Group, said: "Whenever undertaking major transformational change, irrespective of the initial cause of the change, the starting point has to be the clear vision of the difference that will be made to the organisation and how the delivery of products and/or services will improve.

"The Champs2 methodology is designed to do just this, systematically taking an organisation through eight defined stages from identifying the strategic need for the change, right through to realising the benefits and achieving the strategic outcome."

Martin Bamford, managing director of Surrey-based Informed Choice, said that with the FSA’s impending retail distribution review on the horizon, outside help to make a smooth transition is in demand.

Mr Bamford said his company changed its fee structure back in 2004 and used outside consultants to help with the transition. Many companies have not made the transition yet and will have to change quickly.

He said: "I think some form of external help is going to be essential in some cases."
