IFAs wondered how long more Abbey can maintain the headline grabbing 8 per cent interest rate, now that the base rate was slashed to 3 per cent.

Mr Attar-Zadeh said: "It is a variable rate that could change but I cannot give any indication of where it is headed."

He said any adjustments to lending rates in response to movements in Bank base rates were usually made on the first day of the following month.
