Legg Mason’s Western Asset boosts Asian bond team

London-based Legg Mason bond subsidiary Western Asset Management has expanded its Singapore-based Asia investment team with four hires.

Western has appointed Desmond Soon from former ST Asset Management as a portfolio manager responsible for managing single country portfolios, including the Legg Mason Western Asset Asian Opportunities fund.

The firm has also hired Swee Ching Lim as a credit research analyst and Wontae Kim and Desmond Fu as portfolio analysts.

The team will report to head of investment management Asia Chia-Liang Lian and be based in Singapore.

The firm said it will also hire an additional senior credit research analyst.

The hires come after Schroders poached Western’s former head of Asian investments Rajeev De Mello and bond manager Julia Ho.
