Liontrust Asset Management has expanded into the multi-asset space after acquiring John Husselbee’s North Investment Partners and hiring multi-manager veteran Paul Kim.

Mr Husselbee has been appointed head of multi-asset and will be joined by Mr Kim, who previously worked at LV= Asset Management and was also a director at FundQuest before that.

Mr Kim was also instrumental in setting up Investment Manager Selection with Richard Timberlake and Peter O’Connor in 1999 and the subsequent growth of the business.

The pair will join Liontrust at the end of the month in a bid to help the company gain a footing in the competitive multi-asset space.

A statement from Liontrust said it had conditionally agreed to acquire the entire issued ordinary share capital of North for £1. It added North would increase Liontrust’s assets under management by £123m.

Liontrust said Mr Husselbee was “one of the most highly regarded practitioners of multi-asset, multi-manager investing in the UK retail market” with 23 years’ experience in managing multi-manager portfolios including at Henderson and Rothschild Asset Management.

John Ions, chief executive of Liontrust, said: “North is attractive because of the opportunity it gives us to be successful in the multi-asset market.

“John Husselbee’s experience and excellent capability in managing multi-asset portfolios and the focus of the business on providing advisers with access to cost-effective bespoke portfolio management.

“This is a continuation of our successful strategy of the past three years of attracting the right talent with the right client proposition to continue our growth in assets. We are confident that our marketing and sales capability will enable us to increase significantly the amount of assets managed by the team.”
