Two days before the Autumn Statement, where the chancellor brought forward rises in the state pension age to 68 by the 2030s instead of the current planned date of 2046, Baroness (Patricia) Hollis of Heigham, a Labour peer and member of the Pensions Advisory Service, described a one-size-fits-all pension age as “regressive and unfair”.

In a debate on the Pensions Bill in the House of Lords, Baroness Hollis said the current rules forced those who have had “hard lives” to subsidise those who were expected to live longer, having been “better educated and better off”.
