The rate of inflation in the UK continued to fall in March, dropping to 1.6 per cent, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The rate of CPI inflation was down from the 1.7 per cent reading in February and represented the sixth consecutive month that the rate of inflation had fell.

The figure was significantly lower than the 2.8 per cent inflation rate seen in March 2013 and the 3.5 per cent reading in March 2012.

The ONS said the biggest downward pressure on prices came from “transport, particularly motor fuels, with other smaller downward effects from the clothing and furniture and household goods sectors”.
