The Association of Investment Companies has announced free seminars to educate advisers about the closed-end sector and how investment companies can add value to clients’ portfolios.

The four investment seminars will run in Newcastle, Edinburgh, London and Birmingham from September to November this year, with each starting at 9.30am and finishing at 12.30pm.

Following an introduction by Jacqueline Locke, head of training at the AIC, and a discussion on what influences the volatility of an investment company share, the opening session will turn to James Burns, head of multi-manager at Smith & Williamson, who will discuss the value of investment companies.

The second session will be led by a fund manager, who will explain investment approaches and processes, and discuss what advisers should consider when comparing companies. Bruce Stout will speak in Newcastle, Dominic Neary in Edinburgh, Marcus Phayre-Mudge in London and Paul Niven in Birmingham.

Adviser view

Ray Tammam, an independent financial adviser at Manchester-based Fairstone Financial Management, said: “The seminars are reasonably interesting, but you have to choose the right one carefully. I prefer ones that focus on multiple areas, rather than something very specific. I won’t be rushing to one, but if you deal a lot with investment trusts it will be of big interest.”
