Advisers and GPs need better communications so that clients get the most appropriate life and critical illness cover, Dr Gary Bolger has said.

Axa PPP’s chief medical officer said: “Good communication is a two-way process, so it is important for GPs to remember that a sizeable minority of their patients may not have sufficient knowledge or understanding to take in what they’re saying.”

This could cause them to portray incorrect information to their advisers when seeking insurance. So the private medical insurance provider has launched an online glossary to help patients better understand some of the commonly used medical terms and bolster communication between doctor, adviser and patient.

According to Axa PPP’s survey of 2,000 adults who had attended a GP appointment in the past 12 months, 73 per cent felt confused and anxious about what their GP had told them.

While 74 per cent asked their GPs to explain something they had not understood, 11 per cent were too embarrassed to do so.

Martin Dodd, financial adviser at Wolverhampton-based Midlands Investment Agency, said: “Anything that improves client understanding will have a more successful claim, as the more people know, the more likely they will know what they are buying.”
