Insurer Legal & General has enhanced cover for the top four most-claimed conditions, and created a new engagement tool to help people understand critical illness, Russell Whitworth has said.

The underwriting and claims director for Legal & General Assurance Society said that, as part of an ongoing campaign to help make financial security easier to achieve, L&G has enhanced cover for cancer, heart attack, stroke and multiple sclerosis.

This is the insurer’s top four most claimed critical illnesses. Mr Whitworth said L&G had also updated its definitions for blindness, deafness and carcinoma in situ of the breast within its critical illness cover plans.

Mr Whitworth said: “Choosing the right CI policy can be a real challenge for customers. There are now so many different policies on the market, with differing terms, definitions and levels of cover, that consumers may be confused or put off from taking out cover altogether – even with the help of a broker or adviser.”

To help make things easier, L&G has launched a “user-friendly” interactive body tool, he added. The tool, called AnatoME, aims to make CI cover easier to understand.

Emma Thomson, life office relationship director for London-based Lifesearch, said: “The changes are very welcome, and while L&G is following other providers who have made similar improvements, it is still good news for consumers to give them greater coverage and peace of mind.

“However, it is disappointing though that these changes are not applied retrospectively. We have great enhancements that just affect new customers. I have been campaigning for product improvements to apply for loyal, existing customers, and it is a shame that a big player such as L&G did not do this.”
