Jupiter Distribution

This £481m fund, which was launched in 2002, has been run by Jupiter’s Alastair Gunn and Rhys Petheram since 2010.

The fund factsheet states that it’s designed to appeal to risk-averse investors seeking a steady, regular yield and modest capital gains. The managers set out to achieve this by investing in an actively balanced portfolio of fixed interest securities and mainly UK equities.

The fund is split roughly 70/30 per cent between bonds and equities, with Mr Gunn managing the equity portion of the portfolio and Mr Petheram responsible for the bond element.

The factsheet explains: “Alastair looks to exploit equity valuation anomalies and focuses on companies that can grow steadily into the future by virtue of strong balance sheets, healthy cash flows and significant barriers to competition. For the bond element, Rhys focuses on higher quality, primarily investment-grade bonds of well-managed companies that he feels are reasonably valued for the yield on offer.”

The managers’ approach has seen them clock up top-quartile performance in the IMA Mixed Investment 0-35% Shares sector over one, three, five and 10 years. The fund has outperformed the sector, with a total five-year return of 37.50 per cent, against a sector average total return of 23.85 per cent.

What the judges say

The judges welcomed the fact this fund is a bit more cautious than the rest, with a conservative nature.
