Healthcare/Biotech:

Polar Capital Healthcare Opportunities Fund

This Dublin-domiciled fund was launched in December 2007 and is managed by the duo Daniel Mahony and Gareth Powell.

It aims to preserve capital and achieve long-term growth by investing in a globally diversified portfolio of companies within the healthcare industry.

The team is comprised of five sector specialists with a combined 60 years of industry experience. In addition the portfolio, which is the result of fundamentally driven analysis and stock selection, is relatively concentrated with an average of somewhere between 40 and 45 positions.

Unsurprisingly many of the top 10 holdings in the fund are in the pharmaceuticals area including Merck and Roche, the joint largest holdings at 5.1 per cent of the portfolio each.

As a result, the largest sector exposure is to pharma at 35.8 per cent of the fund, although this is a relative underweight compared with the MSCI AC World/Healthcare index, even though the fund is benchmark unconstrained.

What the judges say

The winner takes a fairly innovative approach to the asset class, delivering steady returns.
