Kames Ethical Cautious Managed

It is the second consecutive year the fund has won this category. Kames Ethical Cautious Managed fund, which sits in the IMA Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares sector, is managed by Audrey Ryan and Iain Buckle.

Launched in March 2007, its ethical screen filters out companies it believes “harm people, society, animals or the environment”.

According to its key investor information document, the portfolio can allocate no more than 60 per cent to equities and is likely to have a smaller company bias as a result of its predefined ethical criteria. The fund is not restricted by country or market nor is it constrained by any benchmark or index.

The portfolio currently has 49.63 per cent in equities, 39.91 per cent allocated to fixed income and 10.46 per cent in cash.

It has maintained a top-quartile performance in the IMA Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares sector across one, three and five years to October 15. Over five years, the fund has notched up a total return of 57.70 per cent, compared to the sector average of 27.74 per cent.

What the judges say

This fund is run by very good managers, whose bias towards ethical investments is still tending to lead to outperformance.
