People constituting ‘stretched’ or ‘squeezed middle’ who are supporting both older and younger family members number many more than 1m, according to LV=.

They suffer from the demographic consequences of an ageing population and couples having children later in life. They are having to shell out for food and household bills, and paying off debts and home renovations.

Altogether 15m Brits are supporting younger or older family members. Whatever happened to empty nest syndrome?
