TPAS and ABI launch pension scam awareness drive

The Pensions Advisory Service and the Association of British Insurers have launched a joint social media campaign to raise awareness of pension frauds.

Consumers will be provided with information on how to avoid risking their pension in a hoax, including insights into how the fraudsters work.

Michelle Cracknell, chief executive of the TPAS said: “Pension scams are becoming more prevalent.

“We have calls from many people who have been approached by cold callers offering pensions reviews.

“The campaign launched by TPAS and the ABI is helping raise awareness of the warning signs that people should look out for and the risks involved.”

Yvonne Braun, head of savings, retirement and social care at the ABI, said: “Raising awareness of such scams will enable people to be more vigilant and stop them becoming innocent targets.”

Parminder Dhothar, intelligence and investigations manager for closed life fund consolidator Phoenix Group, said April’s pension freedoms raise the prospect of more people falling foul of frauds.

He said: “The fact that policyholders are confused about what the changes mean for them, when they come into force and the tax implications of cashing in a pension, increases the risk that they will be exploited by fraudsters.”
