BlackRock hires global head of impact investing

BlackRock has appointed Deborah Winshel as a managing director and global head of impact investing, ahead of the launch of a new platform, BlackRock Impact.

Ms Winshel will help launch the dedicated platform, which will cater to investors with social or environmental objectives.

In her new role, she will also be responsible for overseeing BlackRock’s global corporate philanthropy programme.

BlackRock said that it currently manages more than $225bn in strategies that are designed to align clients’ portfolios with their objectives and values and confirmed that this will now come under BlackRock Impact.

Laurence Fink, chairman and chief executive of BlackRock, said: “Today, many clients are looking for investment opportunities that advance social and financial goals at the same time. While the roots of this movement can be traced back many years, the frequency and complexity of these mandates are increasing.

“More and more, clients are looking to measure the returns on their investments both by the societal and financial outcomes they can help to create.”

Ms Winshel has served as president and chief operating officer of The Robin Hood Foundation and was the chief financial officer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Prior to that, she spent more than 12 years working in New York and London for JP Morgan’s investment bank.
