Insurer Zurich has paid 93 per cent of its new income protection claims in 2014.

According to a statement from the provider, it has also paid £191m in total for all protection related claims.

This comes as research from the provider revealed that an increase in take-up of income protection among employees would have major benefits for the government and taxpayers.

Zurich has urged the government to stimulate the IP market by introducing a temporary annual tax-rebate of £50 per insured person to companies offering income protection to employees and to people taking up the insurance privately.
