OMGI plans further Asia growth with hire

Old Mutual Global Investors (OMGI) has appointed Simon MacKinnon to the newly created role of Asia strategy adviser as part of its plans for further growth in the region.

In his new consultancy position, Mr MacKinnon will work closely with Julian Ide, chief executive at OMGI, and Carol Wong, head of distribution Asia, who has the led establishment of the Hong Kong based Asian distribution team.

He will work with them on the operating model needed in the region and will also assist Old Mutual International on the development of their “footprint” in the Asia Pacific region, it has been confirmed.

Mr MacKinnon, whose role was effective from February this year, said: “There is a very big opportunity in the market for high performing British asset management houses that have on-the-ground investment and distribution capabilities.”

In a statement, the company acknowledged that it has “significantly enhanced” its capabilities in the Asia Pacific region in the past two years, including the creation of an Asian equities team in October 2014, headed by Josh Crabb.

The team will be based in Hong Kong during the second quarter of 2015 and includes specialist China equities portfolio manager Diamond Lee, who joined in November last year.

Mr MacKinnon is chairman of Sinophi Healthcare, non-executive director of London Bridge Capital and non-executive chairman China of Modern Water and Xeros.
