European markets steady as Nasdaq hits new high

European stockmarkets have moved higher in early trading, supported by strong performance from the US, where the Nasdaq index finally surpassed its dot.com peak.

The US technology index closed at 5,056.06, above it previous highest close in March 2000 of 5,048.62, but still shy of its intraday high of 5,132.52.

As a result in early trading the FTSE 100 gained 0.29 per cent, while the FTSE EuroFirst 300 added 0.15 per cent. The French Cac 40 index climbed 0.36 per cent, while the Dax index in Germany added 0.18 per cent.

Asian markets, however, were more of a mixed bag with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closing 0.83 per cent lower, while the Hang Send index in Hong Kong gained 0.22 per cent.
