New Capital hires Hermes’ Leahy for UK equity fund

Active investment manager New Capital has recruited “specialist” UK equity fund manager John Leahy.

Based in London, Mr Leahy will manage a dedicated UK equity fund to complement the firm’s existing range.

Prior to joining, Mr Leahy was at Hermes Investment Management, running UK smaller company strategies for 14 years, including the Hermes UK Small and Mid Cap Ucits fund. He joined the firm as an analyst in 1998, having previously worked at G. Ullman Fund Management as a US equity portfolio manager.

New Capital is a subsidiary of EFG Asset Management and employs high-conviction strategies designed to produce long-term outperformance for clients.

Moz Afzal, EFG chief investment officer, commented that the appointment will be instrumental in helping the firm further develop its pan European and global equity franchise.

Mr Leahy added: “Launching a focused UK equity fund is an excellent opportunity for me to leverage my expertise to benefit New Capital’s clients seeking specialist investment opportunities in the UK.”

The firm launched the New Capital Global Equity Conviction fund in May - the tenth Ucits fund in its range.
