Better than expected German manufacturing PMI

The Markit Flash Germany PMI has come in at 53.2 for August, from 51.8 in July, putting it at a 16-month high.

Financial information provider Markit reported that output and new orders in Germany increased at their “sharpest rates” in four months.

Oliver Kolodseike, economist at Markit and author of the Flash Germany PMI, said: “Encouragingly, manufacturers reported accelerated production growth, adding to signs that Germany’s goods-producing is in a better shape than last quarter, when official data signalled only a fractional increase in manufacturing output.”

But the Flash France Manufacturing PMI tells a different story, as it dropped to 48.6 in August, down from 49.6 in the previous month and a four-month low.

Jack Kennedy, senior economist at Markit, suggested manufacturing “continued to struggle amid a sharper drop in new orders”.
