MPs to question ABI, NAPF and McPhail on freedoms

The Work and Pensions Committee has confirmed the range of industry experts it has selected to give evidence to its first oral session on pension freedoms guidance and advice.

Those summoned include National Association of Pensions Funds’ chief executive Joanne Segars and Association of British Insurers’ director general Huw Evans.

The Pensions Advisory Service’s chief executive Michelle Cracknell and Citizens Advice head of policy research Rachael Badger have also been called to answer questions.

The Pensions Policy Institute’s director Chris Curry will also be in attendance, along with Teresa Fritz from the Financial Services Consumer Panel and Hargreaves Lansdown’s head of pensions research Tom McPhail.

This second session of the committee is due to take place during the afternoon of 16 September and will also include economic secretary to the Treasury Harriet Baldwin, along with several senior members of the Financial Conduct Authority.

The committee is looking at whether people are adequately supported in making informed decisions about their retirement savings in light of the changes introduced on 6 April.

Frank Field, chair of the committee, previously commented: “Many constituents were ripped off in the process of putting their earnings into pension savings, we have a duty to ensure they are not ripped off again if they wish to take their money out and spend some lump sums.”
