Baillie Gifford’s Slater to lead US equities team

Baillie Gifford has selected Tom Slater, co-manager of its £3.6bn Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust, to head up its North American equities team.

Mr Slater, who joined Baillie Gifford in 2000 and has managed the investment trust alongside James Anderson since 2009, will continue in this role but also takes over at the helm of the North American team, replacing interim head Gary Robinson.

According to FE Analytics, the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust has returned 88.5 per cent over three years compared to 39.3 per cent from the AIC Global sector.

The firm said Mr Robinson will retain a “leading role” within the team.

Meanwhile, John MacDougall is also moving from the global discovery team to the long-term global growth team.

Charles Plowden, joint senior partner at Baillie Gifford, said: “Tom Slater’s appointment underlines our commitment to building a world class North American equities team, and will also ensure that this group maintains close ties with our global strategies.”
