Those who attended the BSA annual lunch are likely to have noticed two things: the fish main course looked deceptively like chicken, and Harriett Baldwin MP, economic secretary to the Treasury, is a fan of building societies

Speaking to a crowd of delegates and industry experts at the event at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London, Ms Baldwin, who is also City minister, gushed with praise for the societies that apparently lent £26.4bn of gross new mortgages in the first half of 2015.

Let’s hope the Treasury keeps looking kindly on the sector.
