Pupils at Coburg Primary School in Southwark received a mail bag of letters from employees at financial services group Nomura this week.

The letters were written as part of a pen-pal scheme designed by Nomura and charity School-Home Support, to promote literacy and employment aspirations amongst Year 5 children at the school.

Jan Tallis, chief executive at SHS, said: “The scheme has been a great way for Nomura to engage with pupils and inspire them to work hard at school.

“It’s also been wonderful to see the children, some of whom struggle with literacy skills, write pages and pages back to their friends at Nomura.”

The Nomura Charitable Trust was established to support disadvantaged young people in the local communities in which Nomura operates.

Charlotte Edgeworth, head of community affairs at Nomura, said: “We encourage our employees to volunteer in various ways with our grant partners and find that this adds value to the relationship.

“The pen-pal scheme was a very interesting opportunity for staff and we were overwhelmed by the positive response.”
