Stockmarkets await US jobs data

Asian stockmarkets are trading lower as they await jobs data out of the US, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 having closed down 1.1 per cent to 15,106.98 on July 8.

The Hang Seng index is down slightly by 0.9 per cent to trade at 20,515.63.

The US is due to publish unemployment figures later today (July 8) which are expected to indicate whether the Federal Reserve is likely to be encouraged to raise interest rates.

The flagship US stockmarket, the S&P 500, closed down 0.1 per cent at 2,097.90.

The UK’s decision to vote to leave the EU has cast doubts on whether the Fed will raise rates at all this year.

But the FTSE 100 has edged higher on opening this morning, up just 0.1 per cent to 6,541.77.

The FSE 250, which has been hardest hit by the ‘Brexit’ vote, has opened fairly flat to trade at 15,904.98.
