Yet many of these small and mid-cap companies are larger than some of the UK’s FTSE 100 corporates, have strong cashflow and offer a good way of diversifying into the world’s most mature and broad stock market.

This guide aims to explore why there are so few US smaller companies funds, compared with the number of funds investing in large North American corporates, the advantages and disadvantages of US smaller company funds; where fund managers are finding pockets of opportunity at the moment and how portfolios could be constructed.

Contributors of content to the guide are: Francis Gannon, co-chief investment officer of The Royce Funds; Robert Siddles, manager of the Jupiter US Smaller Companies trust; Cormac Weldon, manager of the £64m Artemis US Smaller Companies fund; Jenny Jones, head of US small and mid-cap equities for Schroders; Matt Axline, US-based portfolio manager of the Allianz Global Investors’ Global Small Caps team; Sheridan Admans, investment research manager at The Share Centre; Rob Gleeson, head of Financial Express (FE) Research; Darius McDermott, managing director of Chelsea Financial Services; The Investment Association; and FTSE Russell Indices.
