RDR update: FSA to review use of platforms

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has asked for feedback on whether it should shake-up up the way it regulates wraps and fund supermarkets.

In its latest Retail Distribution Review (RDR) paper, the watchdog stated issues an independent adviser would need to consider when recommending a platform service include whether using one platform could be in line with the requirement to provide a comprehensive and fair analysis of the market.

The regulator stated it was undertaking a thematic review of how intermediaries use platform services, which will focus on assessing suitability and ensure that firms are treating customers fairly.

The FSA stated: "We feel it would be sensible to wait for the outcome of this review before deciding whether any further guidance is needed in this area.

"Given the increasing use of platforms we are keen to hear views on whether changes are needed to the way we regulate wrap platforms and fund supermarkets."
