Firms target websites in recruitment drive - CIPD

Institute says employers are increasingly looking at web technology in hunt for staff

Web technology such as social-networking sites and blogs are increasingly being utilised by companies as part of their recruitment drive, the CIPD claimed.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has said that 20 per cent of organisations use Web 2.0 sites, those used to enhance creativity, information sharing and collaboration, and 8 per cent are planning on using this technology within 12 months.

Deborah Fernon, organisation and resourcing adviser at the CIPD, believes these figures should be higher. She said: "Using technology like Facebook or Second Life, an employer brand can have a global impact. Web 2.0 technology provides an opportunity to bring the employer brand to life and create experiences online that allow potential employees to experience what it is like to work within the organisation."

However, she warned companies to ensure every candidate is treated equally, which would mean that information on a social networking site could only be used if all candidates had such a profile, therefore it could not be used to vet potential employees.
