Many people turn to animals for guidance in times of uncertainty.

Native Americans have their power animals. Hindus revere cows. So, after years of troubled markets, it makes sense that Japan managers might turn to nature for the answer. Akira Yoshimi, manager of the Melchior Japan Advantage fund, has a power animal of his own, apparently. Is it a bear? Or perhaps a mighty whale? No, Mr Yoshimi likes to refer to himself as “the chicken”. It may sound like a peculiar choice, but his colleagues in the UK assure us the self-applied name is due to his cautious stance and unwillingness to fight the markets.
