The US pony is legless

“The biggest economy in the world is a one-trick pony, and that pony has lost a leg.” These were the immortal words of Patrick Armstrong, co-head of the multi-asset group at Insight Investment.

He was, of course, referring to the world’s only superpower’s current economic strife. The news desk was so tickled by the metaphor that Diary has decided it needed nominating for quote of the month, year and possibly even decade. Reaction comments bandied around the newsroom this week have included: “So does that mean America needs to be put out of its misery using a shotgun?” And: “Well, at least it’s not another bloody football metaphor!”
