So it was no surprise to be approached by a group of British film-makers asking for help to raise £50,000 for a film created around the problems faced by HBOS last September.

Michael's Resignation will be "a dark, Tarantino-esque psychological thriller inspired by the near-collapse of HBOS", and hopes to make a return of "10-20 times" punters' investments.

There are 50,000 units priced at £1 each, with a minimum stake of £5, available through the film's website, www.michaelsresignation.com.
