Budget round up

- Small self administered scheme (SSAS) funds can no longer be used to pass on pension funds tax free on death. Any increase in the pension rights of one member following the death of another member - if the two members are family or partners - will be treated as an unauthorised payment subject to a tax charge of 70%, which when combined with inheritance will bring the potential charge to 82%. The charge will not apply if the scheme has 20 or more members and the benefits are spread equally.

News in brief

- The number of buy to let mortgages increased in 2007 despite uncertain market conditions, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). Its data showed that buy to let mortgages rose from 171,800 in the second half of 2006 to the 179,800 over the same period last year. Data from letting agent Your Move suggests that the trend is continuing in 2008, combined with a clear rise in tenant demand.

Record increase

The ifs School of Finance has pointed to record rises in the number of people taking its certificate for financial advisers (CeFA) as a sign that a career in financial advice is becoming more attractive.
