During the extraordinary general meeting held in Birmingham in Tuesday, a shareholder said it had been brought to his attention that the website had been "performing poorly" during the final weekend of voting.

He said this meant a number of stakeholder's had been unable to register their vote.

The shareholder asked how many votes had been counted in relation to the number of hits the website had received.

Another shareholder then questioned whether voting electronically was an acceptable method to determine the lender's future.

He said: "Are we going to sit here in a month's time and find out 10,000 shareholders did not get a vote?"

During the meeting David Bennett, group chief executive for Alliance & Leicester, said he had not heard any reports of the website failing over the weekend.

When Mortgage Adviser put the question to Mr Bennett during a press briefing after the meeting, Mr Lloyd said: "We received a total of 3000 votes online and we got 500 over the weekend. We did not get any complaints that anyone had been unable to vote."
