The head of fund group relations for Cofunds said the sector accounted for more than 52 per cent of net sales during April. Five of the top 20 selling funds on the platform were also from the sector, including the £2.34bn Invesco Perpetual Distribution fund, the £4.76bn Jupiter Merlin Income Portfolio, and the £1.29bn Henderson Cautious Managed fund.

Ms Woodburn said: “The sector was in high demand with advisers over the first quarter, and it is also interesting to note that UK equities are coming back into favour after outflows in 2012.”

Adviser view

Gavin Haynes, managing director of Bristol-based Whitechurch Securities, said: “The increasing popularity of the sector does not surprise me. It is dominated by multi-asset strategies and illustrates the increasing trend of advisers to outsource asset allocation to investment managers as opposed to building portfolios themselves.”
