Both groups also saw further success as SLI’s £727m UK Equity Unconstrained fund won in the UK Equity category and its £18bn Global Absolute Return Strategies fund also won in the Absolute Return category while Nick Train, co-founder of Lindsell Train, saw the Finsbury Growth & Income Trust investment trust he runs win in the UK Equity Income sector.

Star manager Neil Woodford saw the £2.5bn Invesco Perpetual Distribution fund he runs with Paul Causer and Paul Read win in the Mixed Asset Income category while Richard Woolnough’s £15.7bn M&G Optimal Income fund was picked as the winner in the Sterling Strategic Bond category.

The awards were hosted by OBSR co-founder Richard Romer-Lee, who now runs Square Mile Investment Research and Consulting with Nigel Whittingham and David Pickles.

He said awards were important as they “meant something to fund managers who have worked hard” to produce strong returns for investors and gave them recognition they deserved.

“Some people complain there are too many awards but awards are good and mean things to people,” he said.

“This industry needs people to do well and there are some very good people in it helping investors to do well.”

Mr Romer-Lee added that all the managers and companies shortlisted had an “achievement they should be proud of”.

He also praised the 100 Club Awards for considering aspects which were “important” to investors when deciding who the winners were from each category.

“The awards consider longevity of the manager, significant outperformance and transparency,” he said.

The awards are RDR-ready as they pitch open-ended funds against investment trusts within categories and also highlight the best passive investment manager in a separate category.
