CPI inflation unchanged in spite of petrol fall

Consumer Prices index inflation grew at the same rate last month as in August after a fall in petrol prices was offset by airfares falling at a slower rate than last year.

CPI grew at an annualised rate of 2.7 per cent in September 2013, unchanged from August.

The Office for National Statistics noted that in inflation terms “the picture was calm compared to many months”.

“An upward contribution to inflation from air fares and a counter-balancing downward contribution from the price of motor fuels were the only contributions of note,” the body added.
