A survey of 1996 adults aged 40 also revealed that 19 per cent of couples in the age group had not discussed retirement plans during the past five years, while a quarter had separate current accounts.
A further 30 per cent held savings in separate accounts, and 23 per cent maintained separate investments.
Vince Smith-Hughes, retirement expert for Prudential, said: “A joint conversation with an adviser could be an important step in ensuring that the right pension-saving decisions were made.”
