Plenty of opportunities for ex-military – Lighthouse

The chief executive of national advisory firm Lighthouse Group was speaking in the wake of an announcement last month by the Ministry of Defence that an additional 1400 jobs would cut. He said the time was right for ex-personnel to embark on a new career in financial services.

Mr Streatfield added: “It is unquestionably a very stressful time for those who are unsure of what career path to tread. However a career in the financial services sector could be the perfect opportunity.

“In both careers the key characteristic requirements are similar. Both require a determined, industrious, disciplined and attentive personality to be successful and, having lost 10,000 people from the advice sector in the past 18 months, there are plenty of opportunities to be had.”

Andy Stafford-Smith, a Powys-based adviser for Lighthouse Group, joined the sector in 1995 after more than 20 years service with the RAF.

He said: “After leaving I needed to find a career that maximised my drive, discipline, ambition and problem-solving skills.

“These are the kind of key characteristics held by many in the military, and the financial services sector really allows you to use these abilities.”
