Only 2% of estate agents openly disclose fees – research

Commenting in the wake of an investigation by consumer group HomeOwners Alliance, which revealed that just 2 per cent of estate agents openly disclose their fees on websites, the owner of Denbighshire-based Vale Financial Services said homeowners are being misled into paying unnecessary fees.

Research of 150 estate agent websites revealed that 82 per cent of firms did not make any mention of fees at all, with a third of agents refusing to disclose fees over the phone.

“This is not a surprise,” said Mr Jones. “Homeowners are being charged a range of hidden fees, but people don’t want the hassle of looking elsewhere.”

Paula Higgins, chief executive of the HomeOwners Alliance, said: “Estate agents are far too secretive about the fees they charge, and too often include blatantly unfair terms and conditions in their contracts.”
