Budget 2014: Osborne pledges rise in exports

Exports have been highlighted as a key issue in chancellor George Osborne’s Budget as he says Britain needs to “up its game”.

The chancellor told Parliament the Office for Budget Responsibility had estimated that Britain’s level of exports to emerging economies such as Brazil, India and China had “risen faster than those of our competitors”.

He said Britain had been the “last port of call” for products but that is should be among the leading exporters globally.

Mr Osborne said there would be 5m new manufacturing jobs by the end of the decade in Britain.
