The chief underwriter for Aviva said the insurer had made the move in a bid to prevent advisers having to tell clients that “although they have had a heart attack, it is not bad enough to receive a payment”.

He said: “The new definition is designed to make the cover even easier for customers and advisers to understand. Customers can be reassured that, quite simply, if they have had a heart attack, they can make a claim.”

Statistics show a person suffers a heart attack in the UK every five minutes. Heart attack claims make up 11 per cent of Aviva’s critical illness claims, and last year accounted for more than £14m in claims.

Jason Witcombe, director of London-based Evolve Financial Planning, said: “With critical illness cover it is important to look beyond the quoted premium. It is very important for an adviser to discuss the types of illnesses and ailments covered.”
