It is difficult for banks to accept friends as joint mortgagees or account nominees, but back in the 2000s, things were different for one PR.

According to a certain male Prudential press officer, it wasn’t a bother to get a joint account with another man. But while the pair of friends were sitting in front of the banker, the prudent Pru man claimed they were being bombarded with talk of how tough it is legally to extricate oneself from a joint account.

He said: “I asked if my relationship with my mate happened to be of a deeper nature, whether it would make any difference. The answer was “No”. Apparently, his friend didn’t mind if it could have saved them a few bob.
