Equities veteran Roberts to leave NewSmith

NewSmith’s global equity veteran Simon Roberts is to leave the company with Neil Baker now set to head up the company’s global equity team.

Mr Roberts, who has more than 20 years’ investment experience, has been head of NewSmith’s global equities team, prior to which hed led BlueCrest Capital’s global equities team.

Before BlueCrest, he was a partner and senior managing director at Lazard Asset Management, heading the UK-based investment team. He joined Lazard from Fidelity, where he ran the research department in London.

The group said Mr Baker would be joined by Mira Bhogaita as partner and co-portfolio manager who joins from Ignis Asset Management and technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) specialist Gareth Davies as technical analyst and dealer, formerly head of pan-European TMT trading at Citigroup.

NewSmith said the team’s investment process will remain the same, “including high level screening, bottom up research and specific stock selection”.

Paul Roy, chairman, said: “There is huge demand for compelling global investment offerings. Neil Baker has more than demonstrated his value to investors and with him at the helm we’ll keep building on our global strategy. This will mean adding further resources and growing the product range.”

NewSmith works closely with the global team at SuMi Trust, its 40 per cent shareholder.

Investment Adviser revealed last year the group had hired Matthew Wright, formerly head of UK sales at Carmignac Gestion and former LV= Asset Management sales chief, to spearhead its retail debut.
