The subject of vets’ bills was raised and the amounts involved were certainly eye watering but, luckily, the pal in question had had the foresight to take out pet insurance and this cover was taking care of the expense.

It turns out that most of the assembled chums had some form of protection for the four legged members of their family yet, I know from previous conversations, almost none of them have what I would consider one of the most important contracts in terms of personal insurance - Income Protection.

We could at this point lament the failings of our industry (or my failings as a salesman given these are my friends we’re talking about) but I would prefer to talk about one of the most positive endeavours to come out of the UK Protection market in all my time working within it.

This is the Seven Families campaign, created by industry group ‘The Income Protection Task Force’ and funded by a host of insurers and providers of which, proudly, we are one.

Seven Families is using the stories of real people, chosen by the partner charity, Disability Rights UK, whose lives have been blighted by financial hardship following the breadwinner losing their ability to work through illness or injury, to highlight the need for this vital form of insurance.

Still only in its early phases, Seven Families is already garnering support and widespread coverage in the press and we can expect the profile of the Protection market to be raised significantly by this project.

To learn more about the initiative and how you can use the work being done to broach the topic of Income Protection with your clients, visit www.7families.co.uk

Serendipitously, we unveil some exciting product changes this month, one of which is a short term income protection (IP) option which complements our existing IP range, broadening the appeal of this underrated cover and allowing access to those who may be on a tighter budget.

You’ll be able to find out more on our new Short Term Income Protection Cover in the coming weeks on the VitalityLife Adviser website.
