According the latest research, 26 per cent of Britons have no savings, with 37 per cent among 18-34-year-olds.

Sunlife also found that 38 per cent of under 35-year-olds still save in a jar, and in fact of those that save, do so more in this way than in an Isa. More than half save with their current account.

Clearly, the message needs to get through to youngsters that the government – and banks – are not all bad.
