Community group for young planners launches

A group for young financial planners has been launched in a bid to make the profession more attractive to new blood.

The group, called NextGen Planners, has been founded by Rohan Sivajoti, director of Postcard Planning, and Adam Carolan, director at Xentum.

Mr Sivajoti, who is also advisory services director at eVestor, said: “Our general feeling is that there is not that support out there for younger planners, so we are trying to create a community.

“We have started it on Facebook and that will evolve into a podcast shortly. The website will go live this Thursday and we are planning our first event.

“One of the things we want to do is use this to promote the profession to younger people.”

The group will be aimed at sharing best practice for planners, with advice from senior figures in the industry and those from outside the sector as well.

Mr Sivajoti added that while it is aimed at younger planners, the group will be of use to everyone in the advice industry. “Hopefully, we might be able to teach advisers in their 50s or 60s a thing or two.”

He said once the website was up and running, the group would be producing regular podcasts.

According to one study, the average financial adviser is aged 58 and since 2011, around 4,000 advisers have left the industry, according to figures from the FCA.

This trend has led to the Personal Finance Society beginning work on a government-funded advice apprenticeship.
