It was always known that Brits were a nation of pet lovers, but did we know how much they spent on unnecessary items for their pets?

Well, we do now. Apparently, we spent more than £1bn on pet accessories on our animals last year, according to Direct Line Pet Insurance. The average amount people spent per dog was £76.13, mostly on cushions, collars and clothes.

What about the dog food? Probably better not to ask.
